I checked the gstreamer source code package gst-plugins-base that totem
movie player uses. It computes the number of bits in that upper value
(16777215 -> 24 bits, 65535 -> 16 bits) and sets XV_COLORKEY based on
that.
Openchrome xv sets 16777215 for all color depths.
