Argh! Forget that. For some reason the Ubuntu X server doesn't display a
mouse cursor, or a grey background when just executing the X command from
the command line. When I tried to start kdm, I actually got a picture.
So the patch is working for me. Thanks.
Regarding the original issue (VBEModes not working), I've just confirmed
that using the vesa driver doesn't work on the newest Ubuntu either, so
I'll open a bug report against Ubuntu instead.
