 I was working through different revisions.  The last successful revision
 which does not interfere with b43 on my HP 2133 is 592.

 I was unable to compile 593 as I was given the error:

 No rule to make via_crtc.c

 It is possible the problem occured here, I do not know.

 I was able to compile revision 594, and this is when the problem becomes
 noticable.

 I can also report that from revision 594 onwards the fonts in GNOME become
 huge!  This continues even with revision 740.  N.B. revision 594 fixes
 CTRL+ALT+F1 window switch.

 So it looks like 593/594 is the culprit.
