 I've tried the following over the last week:

 Kernel 2.6.28 - same result, still crashes
 mpeg2 dvd rip - still crashes (my other tests were with mpeg4 avi files)
 use xine instead - doesn't crash!

 So i'm sorry guys might not be a bug with openchrome at all, but it looks
 like a combination of mplayer/dwm - xine/dwm was fine and did not lock up.
 Thanks for your help though - I'll continue to play with this as time
 allows and let you know if I find anything which definitely points to the
 openchrome driver, but for now I'm not sure that this is the problem.
 Sorry for any inconvenience...

 If Simon agrees, I'd like to change this to invalid/fixed for now?
