Blacklisting the via framebuffer (viafb) in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-
framebuffer.conf seems to have solved the scplit-screen issue. Also the
little black square in place of one of the top-panel hide buttons,
mentioned above, has disappeared.
But now, when I try to switch to a console screen with ctrl-alt-F3 (for
example), I get a multicolored screen, instead of a blank screen, as
described in my original Launchpad bug report. The multicolor screen
behavior has happened before, in the history of this driver on this
system.
