Comment:

 Same hardware, same symptoms. Running Ubuntu's default openchrome driver
 (SVN 827) noticed this issue after upgrading to flash player 10.1 (from
 10).

 Could this be a flash player issue? have they moved to a new render method
 unsupported by this driver?

 Alt + SysRq + k allows me to kill the xserver
