Well, things seem OK with the headers and libs going into /usr/local/include and /usr/local/lib, so I'll reverse the change. Wish I could recall why I did that.

Do you want to document why and how we should compile hdf, etc.? From what I can see in a normal installation of HDF it would not put the include files in a hdf directory.
