Just for those interested, you may note that I'm adding support to
launch a web browser from within the OpenDX gui. I'm going to try and
get the help system ported over so that all help runs to a web
browser if so desired. I now currently have this working for the
Tutorial and the Tech support options on Unix, Windows, and MacOS X.
On Windows and MacOS X, this will be the default, on Unix, if you set
the DX_WEB_BROWSER environment variable to your browser name, it will
override the internal document viewer.
For example: setenv DX_WEB_BROWSER netscape
As long as your browser can launch, it will be used for the Tutorial
and Techsupport options. If it cannot be launched, then the original
Motif based help windows will be displayed. Please test this out. It
should work with netscape and mozilla, but I haven't tested it with
any others (such as hotjava).
Over the next week or so, I will be trying to develop a scheme to get
the whole help system set up so that a web browser can be used as the
help system instead of the built-in Motif. This will allow us to
update the html documentation and then view it as the help system. Of
course this is only being added on as an option and not replacing the
current system.
Let me know if you have any concerns or wish to help contribute to this.
