This is a problem with autoconf 2.53. I'd suggest downgrading to 2.52
or see if you can get help from the autoconf group. If you do a make
check in autoconf, you're going to see that your not passing their
tests--how do I know, I've already gone through all this with
autoconf 2.53 on cygwin and MacOS X.
