You need to build and compile netcdf if you plan on using it.  There is 
a slight problem with netcdf on RH8.0  I have a version that compiles 
just fine that has slight problems resolved with the official dist 
available at
<ftp://attica.ssc.usm.edu:2121/pub/matt/netcdf.tgz> if you don't want 
the hassle yourself.
