Situation report:

I compiled the latest CVS version of DX on an Opteron
running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (United Linux v.
1.0).  After updating LIBTOOL, AUTOCONF and AUTOMAKER;
I got an easy compilation. It looks like we have not
seen the end of the "SOCKET bufsize" annoyance. The
numbers in the message are 262144 and 262142. Perhaps
a check for a trivial difference is in order? (yuck)

More significantly, I stumbled into a problem with the
SCALAR interactor module. When I tried to set its
attributes, MIN and MAX were set to 2.7e-312 and INC to
3.95e-323. Attempts to change any of those values
produced an error message along the lines of "value is
greater than maximum". I did not do anything
approaching an exhaustive test but the other tests that
I made on this 64 bit executable worked just fine.

I also have two Xeon machines available, one running
Red Hat 8.0, the other RH 9.0. Neither exhibited the
SCALAR problem and only the RH 9.0 machine had the
SOCKET warning.
