As far as visualizing your data, DX would suit your needs just fine. We use it for 3D volumetric all the time. Could you please explain further what you mean by clicking/selecting/dragging? Do you actually want to change the shape of the plume and chemical concentration to match at varying x,y, and z locations?

We are currently in the process of evaluating OpenDX were wondering if it
really will fit our needs as I've been assured.
We are interested in creating a 3D contamination plume given an x,y,z
location and a chemical concentration value at each of those locations.
We would like to create a module in DX that would allow us to manually
manipulate the volume by clicking/selecting/dragging.
Has anyone used DX for geologic visualization and/or attempted a similar
task?
