Then things are different for you. I got root access for this
installation.
However, the technical details you mention are of interest, I think,
because some of them are hard to guess (well, at least for me).
It seems that the problem was that I had compiled the Mesa lib with gcc,
but other things, in particular OpenDX itself, with xlc; it may look a
bit inconsequent, but actually in earlier installations of other
software I have had problems in some cases with xlc while gcc worked
well and vice versa. A quick try right now after fixing this seemed to
do quite OK.
