U. Montana developed a USGS DEM format filter a number of years ago (I think on the DX BonusPak CD, http://www.research.ibm.com/dx/bonuspak/contrib/gis2dx/). But DEMs come in many formats. Most (e.g., ETOP05, GTOP30, GLOBE) are simple 2d arrays of shorts (meters above/below sea level) per tile, cell-centered. These can be directly imported with the general array importer.
