As I mentioned earlier, we already have a module for doing just this
named Splice <http://www.vizsolutions.com/products.html>. Now if some
organization would like to see this module added as open source, I'm
sure for the right $$ we could work something out (Sorry for the ad,
but we have to pay for our salaries some how).

You know, the right way to do this is to build a module to do it. If you
limited it to the simple case you describe, it'd be easy. If you did the
more general case of n-dimensions and arbitrary data types, it'd be a good
addition to the source base.
