You read my mind.  That !Import script is what I wrote yesterday. ;-)
That appeared to be the simplest option.

Takes a few seconds, but the final version will be in C in a DXcallm
program, so that should help.

It sounds like almost the same project, from a loading perspective at
least.  I don't have to tile on-the-fly though; I did it to make the
dataset sizes manageable and loading more straightforward.
