I agree 100%, as far as visualization accuracy is concerned.   There's also
a dynamic range issue, though that can be handled by simply scaling.

Maybe it's dumb, but... do really need to *visualize* double precision
data? I also do my computations in double prec, but I write out single
prec data, because it's OK for my purposes. In my case, double precision
is to reduce numerical error during calculation, but it is not necessary
to have the data visualized with a precision of say, a dozen or more
digits after the decimal point.
