I haven't used netCDF with the data prompter in many years. I just access
the netCDF files directly. However, Import of netCDF works just fine on
Windows and other platforms. There are some issues associated with it,
which are outlined in the user's guide. The basic code of netCDF in DX
hasn't been updated, however, in perhaps five years. Some of these issues
have also been discussed in the past on the netCDF e-mail discussion group.
It mostly has to do with metadata conventions.

Subject: [opendx-users] Importing data in OpenDX

Regards,

Has anyone tried, with success, to import NetCDF files into OpenDX (using
DX's Data Prompter)?

I am presently trying to import NetCDF output files from a numerical ocean
model (i.e. the Princeton Ocean Model) into OpenDX Version 4.1.1.; running
on a Windows 98 platform.

Earlier this summer, I downloaded and installed the OpenDX-4.1.1 binary
files, inclusive of the replacement 1.6 MB DXExec-4.1.1. zipped file
(available from the OpenDX.org server), on a Gateway 2000 Solo 9150 laptop
with the following specifications:

a 400 MHZ Intel Mobile Pentium II processor,
a 512K integrated SRAM Level 2 cache,
288 MegaBytes of synchronous DRAM system memory,
an ATI Rage LT Pro 3D 2X AGP Video Controller,
8 MB SGRAM Video Memory,
a 14 GB uncompressed hard disk
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222 A

I am using Exceed 6.2 as the X-server.

To the best of my knowledge the installation was successful and I am able
to load the DX User Interface (Editor.bat), the DX Startup Menu (Menu.bat),
Prompter (Prompter.bat) and the Tutor (Tutor.bat).

However, whenever I try to import my NetCDF file (or any of the other
sample files supplied with OpenDX 4.1.1.; e.g "test.hdf") the programme
loads the user interface (Visual Program Editor (VPE)) and, even though the
latter does not hang/freeze-up, the Data Explorer window appears to
terminate with a busy mouse pointer and the message "Please Wait...".

Whenever I subsequently quit VPE, I get an X-server Error which says
"unable to connect to dxexec" and the dxexec prompt window returns:

"DXLink Error: connection to DX broken
Can not determine server version number!"

a) Has anyone got any thoughts or advice on this matter; perhaps a possible
solution, or something I could try? I have basically tried everything I can
think of at the moment.

b) Is there anyone else who has installed OpenDX 4.1.1 onto a Windows
platform (9x or NT), with success, and is presently successfully importing
files (i.e. CDF, NetCDF, HDF, image files, general array format files, or
any of the other listed formats) into DX using Data Prompter?

c) Is there anyone working with NetCDF files; either on a "Windows" or
another platform?

I'd really appreciate hearing from someone as I continue to try to resolve
my importation problems.

With thanks,

David Narinesingh
