If I had to guess, if you go over to the connection pulldown you'll find you have no server connection and therefore the choices on the execute menu are grayed out. Ordinarily dx would start the server automatically, so there's some trouble (some mentioned on this list).
May I guess also that you're running with the "startupui" under windows? Run dx -script to see if the exec will run at all, run dx -edit to see if dxui can start the exec standalone. Report back some more results and details...
