Thanks for responding to what I realize was a trivial question.  I wasn't
saying that something didn't work, I was saying that I couldn't find out how
to make something work.  I did know about the need to Mark the data to view
it, but this did not produce an image.

To my embarrassment, today it works.  I can only guess that something had
got messed up in the X server (I'm using Cygwin) and that rebooting in the
interim fixed it.

I do plan to buy your shamelessly plugged book, but being on the other side
of the globe means that it will take a while to reach me.
