Thank you for your excellent description of the workings of DX. I have been observing its behavior with little wrapper scripts around its key executables, and couldn't really figure out why dxui was being called, etc. As for my problem, I was going to say that it DOES matter from where I ssh, which then led me to my answer. Our lab environment has it set up so that they do something odd with our DISPLAY variable when we ssh, so we don't have to set it up by hand. Basically, it tunnels X through ssh. Normally this works fine. But from my SGI, it apparently makes a difference -- setting the DISPLAY variable by hand on my local host has fixed the problem!

(PS Jeff and Betsy -- this also fixes the "slow as molasses" thing.  :-)
