I recall that Chris Pelkie had a trick for dashed contour lines from
perhaps a decade ago. I don't remember the details, however...

Hey good memory! I was loathe to reply cause it's embarrassingly kludgy. It did work, though. I don't seem to have a macro or anything so this is an exercise (best) left to the reader.

Create an index of positions on the contour line (Inquire, Construct, Replace).
Compute ( index modulo 2) to generate a list of valids (even = 0) invalids (odd = 1) (if you want to do an Opacity map to knock out segments) or blacks (0), whites (1) if you want to colorize as bars (pick any 2 colors) Create a Colormap/Opacity map and colorize the data; I seem to remember that Post helped to make the bars solid rather than interpolated from point to point
Presto! (I think)

Like Lloyd said, you can just sphere glyph the positions to get a cool 3D dot effect (either with or without my technique to get alternate colors).

I seem to remember taking my routine further and Selecting one indexed position and text glyphing the Iso value (took some tuning to get the Selected point to be where I wanted it). For a label...

But, as you suspect, there is no option to choose to do this automagically.
