After I sent the answer, I realized that that Compute will complain because of the mismatch of data to the number of positions. Sorry about that. For other data, that trick will work.
So, yeah, Refine is the easiest way to go... Refine("triangles") works well. The other approach doesn't however as the elevations are face dependent and thus don't match the number of positions.
