I have answered my own question. I did all my tests in H/W rendering prior to the bug report.

I just switched to S/W rendering and things work much better. The only outstanding issue is why a two-word bogus string gets concatenated (but who cares, right?).

So we'll chalk this up as a 'feature' not a 'bug'. If in H/W rendering, at least on a Wildcat 6110 on a Windows machine running Exceed3D 7.1, 'front' and 'back' colors are not properly supported.

Side note: in S/W rendering, I had never noticed or do not remember that if you specify ONLY 'front' or 'back' colors, in the absence of previously specified 'colors', you disappear the faces without colors. I.e., specify only 'front colors' and the back faces are now invisible. Cool! Stealth visualization: you can say anything you want about the results!
