What you were told is false. The two packages are completely independent,
although they first came to market about the same time (1991). Despite the
similarity in names there are significant architectural differences between
them. Data Explorer was an IBM licensed program product until 1999,
developed, marketed and support at IBM Research. It has been open source
since. There are several papers published in the visualization literature
concerning it. There are additional details at www.opendx. org and
www.research.ibm.com/dx.

SGI sold IRIS Explorer to NAG in the mid-1990s. I believe that NAG
continues to support and market the software on a commercial basis.

I have been told that OpenDX and Iris Explorer started
out as a single application. I haven't been able to
verify that and it seems strange because one was developed
at IBM and the other at SGI. Can anyone verify whether
this statement is true?

Thank you,
Jon.
