Randy,

Thanks for your prior email. I followed your
instructions (I think) and I get an image like this...

http://starling.us/foo/opendx_image.png

...whereas I was figuring to see many points (or balls) floating
in a cube. Where might I have gone awry? The rest makes sense
but I don't understand the part where you said...

import--mark"positions"--autocolor--image

...but used Select File from the first menu. Someone else had
sent me a screenshot of balls-floating-in-cube which they had
made with OpenDX via a .NET program. But alas I only know Perl.

Using the data prompter, my file looks like this...

file = /foo/rh_engmnt_sy01ds_preloaded_raw.dat
> points = 4080
> format = ascii
> interleaving = record-vector
> field = locations
> structure = 3-vector
> type = float
> dependency = positions

end

Any clues how to get it to the balls-floating-in-box stage?

TIA,

Gan

notes: point import to a .general file which contains the following text:
file = /foo/rh_engmnt_sy01ds_preloaded_raw.dat
points = 4080
format = ascii
interleaving = record-vector
field = locations
structure = 3-vector
type = float
dependency = positions

end

I have ordered the book. But it will take some time to arrive. Meanwhile
would someone be kind enough to hold my hand through my first 3-D
scatter plot via OpenDX?

I have data, N rows of 3 tab-delimited columns. The actual data set
is here...

http://starling.us/foo/rh_engmnt_sy01ds_preloaded_raw.dat

Here are the plots I got from dplot and gnuplot...

I blundered around and did not seem to accomplish much. What is the
correct procedure please? I am running it on NetBSD 1.6.2 where it
built and installed without a hitch. I'll buy the Win32 version if I
can get it to work on NetBSD because I'm looking for a dual-OS
solution to plotting.

Thanks,

Gan
