That's a good trick.

Scalar data can be fed through Compute([a,1,1]) then to Convert("hsv", "rgb") to make colors. Here, the scalar affects hue, but obviously you could do a saturation map with [1,a,1] for example. You would need to run the data through a prior Compute to scale it to the range 0-1 beforehand.
