You are supposed to be able to flip on some switching in the idea
plugin:

I've not actually tried this though on G, I did play with it a little
and when enabled mvn did download a bunch of stuff... but it was
taking too long so I never got to see if was really working.
I think eclipse:eclipse has some option like this too.
