In that case, I would check your PostgreSQL setup.  

If you go to the following page, there is a "Confirming Your
Installation" section.  I recommend you go through that before throwing
OpenEJB into the mix.  Once you can get a simple JDBC example to work
with PostgreSQL, it should be a piece of cake to do it from OpenEJB.
