If this causes an issue in your configuration (even on older systems), you can 
try:

MIRRORS_append = "\
git://github.com/.* git://github.com/PATH;protocol=https\n \ "

This is often used for people whose corporate networks don't allow git protocol.

(I believe this has been standard though since mid 2017, unless you override 
default mirrors -- see the end of the mirrors.bbclass file.
