I've had what looks like the same error building for the x86 machine
both when upgrading a working tree and moving from angstrom-2007.1 to
angstrom-2008.1and with a clean build (on another computer)

This is the clean build configuration
OE Build Configuration:
BB_VERSION     = "1.8.9"
OE_REVISION    = "63328a4d6b1c9e161ae2921b106b5136b02fb764"
TARGET_ARCH    = "i486"
TARGET_OS      = "linux"
MACHINE        = "x86"
DISTRO         = "angstrom"
DISTRO_VERSION = "2008.1-test-20080111"
TARGET_FPU     = ""

the upgrade was on an i686 host, this clean build is on an x86_64 host
