Hi, In our region (Shanghai area), we have the need for advanced manufacturing features since our main customers are in this area (trading and manufacturing). OpenERP has a solid but simple manufacturing and procurement core. Unfortunately, this core is far from being enough for many of our customer and we are working on developing/improving/duplicating/reinventing-the-wheel certain necessary functionalities, for the moment in : - chained picking split/back order compatible with automatic procurement (soon to be published). We could not find anything compatible with standard automatic procurement behavior. - chained picking split without automatic procurement (our moduleĀ stock_back2back_order in apps.openerp.com) - splitting MO including incoming and outgoing picking/moves compatible with automatic procurement (soon to be published). - standalone work orders planning inside a manufacturing order - etc. We made a lot of researches in google, apps.openerp.com, launchpad etc. Some conclusions, milestones so far: - We found some good stuff but never really anything that would fulfill our need (and so far, factories we are dealing with have pretty similar needs). Many found modules were covering similar area but with a lack of features or consistency between them. - most of the time, developments are not documented (so far the weakest point of OpenERP community project). Understandable for some partners competition reason (even if I do not agree with it) - In parallel, I have seen some posts/mails about developing/cooperating together for some applications/functionalities (FIFO, planning, banking etc.). - Some limited expert groups already exist: manufacturing and accounting mainly. As far as I know, they are more discussion groups for the standard OpenERP core. - I understand (and personally agree) that OpenERP will focus on the "standard feature + toolbox maintenance" and will not develop advanced functionalities. - Partners are getting more, more organized, more experimented in OpenERP and willing to cooperate (at least my feeling on reading some mails ;)). - This could be true as well for some verticalizations (some exists such as medical or training but... are scattered all over the web). In short: one never knows what are the rightful modules in your requested area and one never knows where to find a stable, compatible, tested suit of standard advanced features. For the above reasons, I think it could be time for the community to start organizing advanced functionalities around Expert groups. Here is how I see it: - We chould create legitimate expert groups (similar or extensions of the existing ones), responsible to create and maintain an official launchpad repository (eg openerp-manufacturing). - These group would first gather all community modules and sort the most relevant depending on restricted functionality specifications. - They would merge all those modules inside a limited set of modules - they would be responsible to maintain/merge/validate new functionalities/bug fixes etc. - Those modules would be in fine somehow "certified" per se: They should be kept stable and uniform thanks to merge requests controlled by the expert group. - Once stable enough, we could work with OpenERP to get some specific links in the main website so that any user/partner who should require advanced functionalities know where they are available. Maybe this is already somehow existing (at least informally) but I have the feeling it misses formal approach and advertisement... Probably some partners would prefer not to share their knowledge but I think that many more would rather cooperate in such a project. Personally, I would be glad to participate or help in coordinating such a group if there is a strong will from several partners. Any thoughts? --
