Sorry to reply so late (I was off for weeks), but...
I remember last year Ana said of the community days: "if they'd given me the money it costs to do it here, in Spain I would organize the biggest fiesta you've ever seen!" :)

Joke aside, the best would be to seize the opportunities of real-world meetings (community days, trade shows, Spain meeting...) and make well organize web meetings from there. Locals can show up in persons, others can be "telepresent". I'm an experienced telecommuter/web meeting person myself, so I can help/advise if needed - please just ask.

I would separate community event from official event. I would propose even having more than only one day for it and if possible i would open meeting online to make possible participate anyone in the world even if they can not come phisically. In spain, our annual meeting are 2 full days and it usually results quite short.
