Hi,
I have been researching about the configuration of the launchpad
translation process of OpenObject Addons due to the problem Ana Juaristi
has been reported. Now there are 4 branches that are synchronized with
Rosetta, the launchpad translation system. They are:
* OpenObject Addons trunk series
<https://translations.launchpad.net/openobject-addons/trunk/+translations>
* OpenObject Addons 5.0 series
<https://translations.launchpad.net/openobject-addons/5.0/+translations>
* OpenObject Addons extra-trunk series
<https://translations.launchpad.net/openobject-addons/extra-trunk/+translations>
* OpenObject Addons extra-5.0 series
<https://translations.launchpad.net/openobject-addons/extra-5.0/+translations>
The first two, the official addons trunk and official addons 5.0, are
synchronized between them (so if you make or change a translation in one
of them, it changes also the translation in the other one).
Also the last two, the extra addons trunk and extra addons 5.0 are
synchronized between them.
Also all of them are synchronized (imported/exported) automatically to
different branches, except official addons 5.0 (it is imported/exported
manually in each release, I suppose).
In my opinion this configuration is Ok, the translators save a lot of
time avoiding to do the same translations in different branches. I
suggest to document properly this translation processes in the community
book, http://doc.openerp.com/contribute/07_improving_translations.html
But I have detected two problems:
1) Addons extra-trunk branch creates .pot files and uploads them to
Rosetta, but addons extra-5.0 no. This explains that Ana has found 288
modules allowed to be translated in trunk and only 44 in 5.0. This 44
modules allowed to translate in 5.0 are those modules that the author
has committed the .pot file inside his module. Why this two different
behaviours? Could addons extra-5.0 be configured like extra-trunk?
2) The three translations (addons trunk, addons extra-trunk and addons
extra-5.0) that are exported automatically to different branches, create
po files with 2 letters (fr.po) instead of po files with 4 letters
(fr_FR.po). OpenERP 5.0 can only import translations from po files with
4 letters, but not with 2 letters, so the automatic translation export
is useless (I've checked with es.po and es_ES.po). Could Rosetta be
configured to export po files with 4 letters?

Guys, I'm forwarding that to the localization expert list. Sorry I
just forgot it when pointing Ana to the list, I think this is the
right one, at least should they be in copy.
Thank you xrg for you involvement, we have to make that
straightforward for non programmers that are willing to contribute in
their way.

FYI my strategy is to avoid Launchpad for translations, and instead do
them at
the po files, directly.
One main reason is that Launchpad screws the work of translators. It
does not
track their commits, nor does it attribute the work to the people that
really
made it. It would also blindly overwrite the translations, once a new
translator comes in and changes things (no revision control).
Anyway, one point is that you can translate in the source branches.
Second is, you might want to sync the translations. This procedure would
involve producing recent template files from a running instance of the
database
(clean one, preferably). I have some scripts for that, in my "openerp" git
repo.
After getting the template files and working on the .po files, it is
better to
use the gettext tools (msgcat, msgmerge) so that you update the work on
different branches etc. That is the correct way, it preserves the data
(unlike
Launchpad).
I am doing an attempt to setup translation services in Transifex (
http://www.transifex.net/projects/p/openerp/). It has many advantages
over LP,
one of them being that it records the commits, and also that it can simply
send the translation differences (=work) back to teams for revision.
At the
moment, I cannot see the most efficient way to put all the modules in
a nice-
structured way, and I am talking with their team about that.
The final goal is a translation system, which will enable ALL of LP,
Transifex
and direct translations, to be merged and revised by the appropriate
people
(ones that really know the context meaning of strings, see eg. of
"State", or
"Open Accounts" strings).
