Yes.. there is a clear link. If you add a category in purchase invoice line, the asset will be automatically created when you validate the purchase invoice. You can take the data from this purchase invoice. It's correct that it is a wishlist but it's also a good usability improvement for user and the change suposes only adding a single line on code and commenting the default purchase data value... :)
