After some additional testing, it seems the patch I posted above doesn't properly fix the issue either, since it causes the description field to only be updated when a new purchase order line is created, but not when the product is changed.
It seems like the ideal behavior would be to update the description field only when a product is selected. Otherwise any other field should retain the existing value for the description field. I'm not sure how to determine what has changed though, so I'm unable to create the proper patch to handle that.
