Single location in warehouse causing issues

My client has a warehouse that has a single location - stock. If you set up
the location without chaining, then the stock moves arising from a sale are
from stock to stock. So the solution is to set chained location type =
customer. Now when the sale happens the stock move is from stock to customer.
all good.... but
try and do a return for the customer, and stock move is stock to stock
instead of customer to stock.
