You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If as a loggedin user you decide to change your password by going to
preferences, you will recieve a html 500 error as soon as you change
your password.

It seems like access is being denied even before the user's session is
destroyed and returned to the login page... successve browser refresh
results is the same error thus the user has to clear the browser cache
before he can be shown the login page again.
