I presume this is with a v1 branch. Alas, there is not too much that can be 
done. 

V2 has support for multiparts so grouping those channels into separate parts 
would be the way to go. In such a case the library can simply skip over the 
parts that you are not requesting.

A colleague of mine ran some tests using playexr.  He had one EXR sequence 
containing just the regular RGB channels and another with 43 additional 
channels added.

Maybe it will come as no surprise that the multi-channel files play much 
slower, by a factor of 8 in this case.

Is this the unavoidable result of the way channels are interleaved in an EXR 
file?  Are there any strategies to speed things up?
