Release Highlights
===================

This release marks a major milestone in Openfiler development. 2.2 is the second point release on the fantastic rPath Linux platform which has enabled us to rapidly increase productivity.

The most prominent new feature in 2.2 is the inclusion of a local LDAP account management facility. This feature was developed by Nathan Jones (najones[AT]vt.edu), an up-and-coming OF developer and frequent contributor to the Openfiler support forum.

Local LDAP account management means you no longer require an external authentication mechanism such as Active Directory or an LDAP server in order to use Openfiler in authenticated mode.

Another useful and oft-requested feature is the ability to backup the Openfiler configuration; meaning re-installation, and reconfiguration/restoration thereafter, does not have to be so difficult. Again we can thank najones[AT]vt.edu for this feature.

Please note that this is not an excuse to be lax with data backup policy. You should *always* backup your data before performing any major updates to your Openfiler system.

With this release Openfiler is now available in x86 and x86_64 flavors. x86_64 supports larger block devices (>4TB) and large memory configurations. Henceforth, both flavors will be released concurrently.

Downloading Openfiler
======================

You may download Openfiler either from rPath rBuilder online, or from Sourceforge.net. Please note that it may take a couple of days for the images to appear on Sourceforge.net.

*******************************************************************************************
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RE-INSTALL IF YOU ALREADY HAVE OPENFILER 2.1 INSTALLED. TO UPDATE AN OPENFILER 2.1 SYSTEM TO 2.2, RUN THE "conary updateall" COMMAND

=================
Driver Disks
=================

This release now supports the use of external driver disks during installation. If you have a driver module requirement not addressed by these disks, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] As long as the sources are available, we should be able to make a driver module available rather quickly.

To use a driver disk, type "linux dd" at the installer boot prompt.

The following modules are currently available:

- Areca RAID
- Promise SuperTrak

HTTP download
===============

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=90725&package_id=212381

Be sure to select the correct image for your architecture.

Both images must be unzipped before use:

gunzip dd.img.gz

To make use of the floppy images, use the Linux 'dd' command. eg.

dd if=dd.img of=/dev/fd0

To make use of the ISO images, use any standard CD ROM burning tool to burn the image to CD.

====================
Virtualization
====================

The Openfiler distribution can be deployed in several virtualization engines / hypervisors

1) VMware - the VMware image is the simplest to deploy and the most compatible with Openfiler. All you require is VMware Server or VMware Workstation.

2) Xen - in order to use the Xen domU image, you will need to configure a dom0 kernel in your standard distribution. You will need to export block devices as xvd devices to the domU. The disks will be seen as standard IDE block devices in the Openfiler volume manager.

3) Qemu / Parallels - a Hard disk image is also made available. Please note this has received the least amount of testing of the three virtualization options.
