which only contains an exported group. I'm somewhat lost here, is this another
problem or something I'm doing.
Sorry, but I'm unable to reproduce this problem. Did you perform any
manual steps when you were trying to get parted working?
Try
vgchange -an
vgremove data
vgremove storage
vgdisplay to make sure there's nothing else
Go back into the GUI and recreate the volume group.
