Great progress Rafiu, Although OpenFiler is getting stronger with its new features I'm still missing some crucial elements that were mentioned previously to be part of v2.2. It would be nice if we can see LUN control on iSCSI volumes soon for better support over VMware ESX 3 infrastructure (LUNs are still being reset to the value of 0 whenever a change is made to the iSCSI volumes). Another useful feature would be network load balancing setup via main web interface.
I'm not sure if there are any plans for extending High Availability features in the near future but in my opinion advanced administrators would find it very useful to see features like failover between two OF boxes connected to a single backend storage. Such features are already being used at almost all professional solutions like NetApp, EMC, etc., but I believe similar functionalities can be implemented within OF as well. Keep up the good work. Openfiler 2.2 x86 & x86_64 - RELEASE ERRATA (Rafiu Fakunle) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2006 01:44:43 +0000 From: Rafiu Fakunle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [OF-users] Openfiler 2.2 x86 & x86_64 - RELEASE ERRATA To: [email protected], [email protected] Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Openfiler 2.2 Errata Announcement. In this post: * Overview * Updating Openfiler * 2.2 Release Bugs & Fixes * New Features since 2.2 ========== Overview ========== Openfiler 2.2 for x86 and x86_64 was released on 24th November 2006. While we worked as hard as possible to get a quality release out on time, a few naughty bugs (that's the only kind right?) sneaked through. Diligent and experienced users would have noticed several updates were made to the repository in the few days after the release went out and updated their systems accordingly. An ISO re-spin was also done a couple of days after the initial release in order to make first time install experiences less "eventful". This is an official announcement detailing the bugs that were found and a note on how to update to the latest version of the software in the repository. A minor new feature was also added to Openfiler after the release went out. Details below. ==================== Updating Openfiler ==================== The following is the command for updating an Openfiler system to the latest released (fixed) software: conary updateall This command must be run from the "root" account login shell. ========================= 2.2 Release Bugs & Fixes ========================= The following is a list of bugs that made it into the 2.2 release 1. Missing carriage return: the code to generate the samba (CIFS) configuration file was missing some carriage returns, resulting in a corrupt configuration file. 2. Downgrade to parted 1.6.22 from 1.7.1: we had to revert back to parted 1.6.22 because the output from the parted commandset had changed, resulting in a failure of some portions of the Openfiler disk management code. Specifically, you could only create a single partition on a disk, after which subsequent attempts to create further partitions would fail. 3. LDAP Settings blank page: an errant piece of code resulted in a parser error for the LDAP settings page, meaning the page would not render. Not a show-stopper; and only affected folks who would be setting up the local LDAP server for the first time (or, inexplicably, reconfiguring it :)). Furthermore, the LDAP service management was missing some core system functionality that prevented it from starting up in some instances. An update to the distro default package group fixed this. 4. RAID metadata removal: disks that contained RAID metadata (i.e information that tells the RAID management utility what disk belongs to what array) would have their RAID metadata removed automatically when they are taken out of an array. However, this only applied to active RAID members and not disks assigned as spares in an array. That meant any attempt to create a new array containing a disk that was previously a spare disk would fail. This has now been fixed and RAID metadata is handled properly for all cases. 5. FTP Authentication for AD accounts: FTP authentication was not working for accounts coming from an Active Directory or Windows PDC server due to a broken PAM module configuration. This has now been fixed and FTP authenitication works for local LDAP, remote LDAP, AD and PDC. 6. Snapshot service management: some services were not being handled properly (startup/shutdown) for snapshot operations. This has now been fixed and all relevant services will be stopped/started when appropriate for snapshot management. ======================== New Features since 2.2 ======================== 1. Enhanced RAID notification. Nathan Jones has submitted an excellent update to the RAID notification functionality in Openfiler. You may now set several options for notification and configure an audible alarm, in the event of a RAID disk failure, to notify anyone walking past your system to call you an ambulance (you did configure a RAID spare...right?) That covers it. Thanks to everyone whom submitted bug reports and fixes. Happy Openfilering.
