A client is looking to upgrade their Fibrechannel disk array (old HP
Storageworks with 12x64GB drives). Their goals are replace it with more
capacity, but another project is they want to increase the storage capacity of
their DAS server (an HP DL380 with an HP Storageworks SCSI array with 12x150GB
SCSI) that they use as a dumb NAS device.

My knee jerk response to the NAS issue is of course to use Openfiler. However, rather
than purchase some hardware FC array, why couldn't I instead build or purchase a Linux
box, place a FC HBA in it, and run some software package to present the storage in the
Linux box to the FC network? Bam, FC SAN storage capacity problem solved (performance
hasn't been an issue for them.. the HP solution was overkill and they were duped by their
"consultant" a few years back).

Then, I could take their existing DL380, pop an HBA in it, and run Openfiler on it as
their NAS, adding filer and iSCSI capabilities over their DAS "server".

So to make a short question long, does anybody know of a way to turn a linux
box into a Fibrechannel storage device?

Yes, the project you want is SCST.

I think Mike Young has a working kernel for this as well.

Gonna take us till 2.4 though to get it into OF proper.
