It's not a bug, more like an undocumented feature / idiosyncrasy :)

You cannot have your "homes" folder pointing to an existing share (only
an existing folder)

So for instance, if this is your tree:

VG
    LV
          Folder1  <--- allocated as share, cannot be made homes folder
          Folder2  <--- not allocated as share, can be made homes folder
   

I suppose what really needs to happen is that any folders allocated as
shares should not be listed for allocation to "homes".  We'll add that
to our todo list - but don't hold your breath ;)

So in essence, create a new folder under your main LV (in the "Shares"
tab) and allocate that to  "homes" in SMB settings.
