Thanks for the quick response :)
Good story. But if indeed a RAID controller is troublesome, how would
running OF on CFs solve this? To use all drives in a server for storage,
Simple. Some of the higher end (not cheap) RAID controllers aren't
supported by default in the initrd image during installation. You have
to add their drivers for correct operation.
isnt support for that particulair controller still essential? For me
Yes, but the high end raid controller you have might not have a driver
in the initrd image that gets installed. You either have to respin the
initrd for OF on the installation media or you need to build the driver
and make sure it is in the initrd on the CF card. The latter is far easier.
only the last argument is interesting; I dont have hardware issues, but
being able to recover quickly is most certainly a good thing! But then
again, I will need to install a CF drive in my server, so I dont know
This is trivial You can run a CF adapter from a PCI slot or from USB.
We have customers booting/running from their USB drives.
what would be 'better'; make sure that your hardware is on a HCL, and
possible avoid downtime caused by 'cheap' solutions, or recover quickly
using non-compliant H/W. ;)
Again, these are not *cheap* solutions (quite expensive actually). High
performance card support and their associated drivers are not always in
the current build of OF. Calling them "cheap" is incorrect. As far as
"non-compliant" hardware goes, not sure what you mean.
If you aren't interested, don't bother with it. Enough people
apparently are as it has been a persistent thread on the fora and
mailing list.
