Hi, There are a few reasons that transitioning to Qt5 will take a long time for a lot of existing development and maybe even new developers.
Some that come to mind are: * Qt5 has hard OpenGL support requirements. I don't know facts, but there is uncertainty that the rest of the industry will have caught up. * Qt5 will have lots of software bugs for some time while things settle down. * Replacements for existing stuff in Qt4 will need porting effort, such as iiuc custom painting with a QPainter, and anything on the done list. * Qt4 is very good. People will need some good reasons to stop using it. Discussing what will make the jump take time is not what I'd like to do in this thread though. If you agree that people will want/need to stick with Qt4 for some time, what about Qt4 releases after Qt5 is out? How does open governance intersect with Qt4? I think I read that Qt4.8 is to be the last Qt4 release. As Qt5 gets more useful I can imagine it would be useful to add stuff to Qt4 to ease porting, or adding new API to Qt4 to see how it works and if applications can use it before porting the new API to Qt5 (which will be just at the beginning of its API guarantee cycle, so new APIs should have been used somewhere already and not actaully be new). I can also imagine maintainers stepping up for Qt4 wanting to keep maintaining it. >From what I can tell though, it wouldn't be possible for open governance to produce releases. Only Nokia can do that because of trademarks, having the infrastructure etc. A new name would be needed at least (FTR my vote is for Pt, pronouced pretty or pity depending on where you stand ;)). So, will open governance maintainers of stuff in Qt 4.8 have those privileges replaced with Qt5 privileges only? Will Qt4 branches be closed to new commits at some point, or will Nokia respond to community efforts of maintaining it and making it possible to keep releasing it? Or do you see no possibility that that will be wanted by anyone? Thanks, Steve. _______________________________________________ Opengov mailing list Opengov@qt-labs.org http://lists.qt-labs.org/listinfo/opengov
