I've been browsing the JAMIA site (after having spent several hours
figuring a workaround for the screwy proxy system our library system
set up). I noticed a significant theme of medical terminology, similar
to discussions had on this mailing list (a la UMLS, Galen, ICD-9/10,
SNOMED, CPT, LOINC, perhaps HL7). One of the concerns expressed
was the difficulty in modifying existing vocabularies to incorporate
new concepts unforseen at the time of vocabulary standardization.
I was wondering if anyone knew of efforts to utilize neural networks
or similar technology to accomplish such goals. A brief MEDLINE search
didn't turn up much.

Sincerely,
Robert Jordan
