Some very interesting and very profound debate are taking place now on both
mailing lists to which I post this mail, with the same people taking part
into both. (openhealth and freesw)
The license issue is really important (as it goes beyond the license
themselves, sometimes as far as to a philosophy of the society)
I do have a case to resolve:
1/ some poeple think (I am one of them) the GPL and compatible licenses are
good because they garantee freedom and prevent from vendor lock-in
2/ some other think BSD licenses are good, because they allow for easy addon
of proprietary components (that some people want precisely to prevent) that
may appear (long) before their open conterpart,
3/ Belgium and EU (or should I say EU and Belgium) are going to finance (with
public monay) developpement of software that comply with GPL compatible
license,
4/ we all WANT financing to come and help foster the developpment of
opensource applications, if possible integrating the different project that
are similar, but still let private companies run and lead by people who have
difficulties (and I do understand that too, because the point is really
hard), get into the "game", add their component and make money afterwards.
I think the idea of some sort of compatibility matrix is a very good one.
Now : the question for me is: in order to be efficient and efective, to have
as soon as possible a program that run, that can be used in daily life by
people who do NOT care with these issues but have a business (for example a
medical practice) to run, to benefit from these financial support that have a
chance to be much larger thant the ones who will come from private companies
(at least in a first run) and to let us go on, how shall we/I proceed ?
Thnak you for your comments and help.
Best ragards,
Nicolas
