Tom, this is right  from the engineering perspective.  I think John was trying
to move the argument up one level.  His premise is that for open source medical
software to be viable, it needs a larger pool of programmers than computer
engineers, to be precise is needs a large pool of non-engineer health care 
professionals.

 To follow from that premise, he further states, that the language choosen for
this expanded pool of programmers is critical to creating that pool.  i.e., an
appropriate language for 'end user programming' is a pre-condition to getting
more non-engineers involved.

So, we should be arguing this premise first.  Then one can argue which language
fills the pre-condition of the premise.
