How are software subscriptions different than a service
level agreement to keep open source software up to date and
free of known bugs?

For our friends in Australia and New Zealand, Microsoft is
preparing to try out the subscription model for Office:

"Microsoft will sell its Office XP in a new way -- through
subscriptions -- in two countries, but not in the United
States, when that software is released May 31, an executive
said.
...

Subscriptions will be offered in Australia and New Zealand,
because "those countries have simpler markets," said Lisa
Gurry, a Microsoft product manager."
